What Is Bisabolol?
α-Bisabolol is a naturally occurring monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol found in chamomile essential oil. It is:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-irritant
- Antimicrobial
- Antioxidant
In skincare, the (−)-α-bisabolol isomer is most widely used due to its superior stability and biological activity (Ivanova et al., 2024).
Although it can be extracted from chamomile, bisabolol may also be synthesised to ensure purity, consistency, and sustainability in modern formulations.
How Bisabolol Helps Relieve Itch in Eczema?
Eczema involves complex immune pathways. Inflammatory cells release cytokines and mediators that trigger redness, swelling, and persistent itch.
Bisabolol works on Anti-Inflammatory Pathway Modulation. Research shows that (−)-α-bisabolol inhibits key inflammatory signalling pathways; specifically MAPK and NF-κB in mast cells model, mimicking atopic dermatitis. This suggest that (−)-α-bisabolol reduces the release of inflammatory mediators linked to itch and redness (Li et al., 2022).
Safety and Regulatory Considerations
Safety evaluations, including assessments by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, have concluded that bisabolol is safe for cosmetic use at concentrations up to approximately 1% in finished formulations (CIR, 1999).
Under the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive, bisabolol is permitted in cosmetic formulations within established safety parameters. However, users should note that bisabolol enhances skin permeation; therefore, other ingredients in the formulation may also penetrate more effectively into the skin.
