5th April 2022 marked a historic milestone for DMS, as the company signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with UTAR to initiate its first ever collaborative research on health supplements, specifically on weight management products. A remarkable academia-industrial crossover, the MoA stipulates that DMS will support product conceptualisation, regulatory registration and research funding, while UTAR will conduct laboratory-based research to substantiate claims on product efficacy.
The MoA was signed between Ir. Prof. Dr. Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR President, and Dr. Kenneth Chew, DMS General Manager and Head of Innovation Excellence Centre (IEC), representing UTAR and DMS respectively. This collaboration was brought to life by Innovation Excellence Centre (IEC), a platform under DMS aiming to encourage academic institutions to actively translate laboratory research into high quality health supplement products that can benefit consumers. Kick-starting the collaboration are two projects spearheaded by Dr. Amy Saik from UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS).
According to Dr. Kenneth Chew, the signing of MoA signified a new beginning for the health supplement industry, as the collaboration between DMS and UTAR will propagate the development of more products as well as generate supporting scientific data demanded by increasingly health-conscious consumers. Dr Kenneth Chew’s sentiments were echoed by Prof Ewe, who believed the collaboration would improve Malaysia’s competitiveness in the industry globally. He also expressed UTAR’s openness to participate in collaborative clinical trials with DMS in the future.
